Lysi can now offer MSC certified fish oil.
Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international certification authority for sustainable fishing. Many big entities in the markets, such as retail chains and producers of consumer products, have started to require that the product they purchase and resell has a sustainability certificate. LYSI already has another sustainability certification which is Friends of the Sea (FOS).
When LYSI buys raw material from MSC-certified manufactures it is necessary for LYSI to have MSC supplier certification (chain of custody) to ensure an unbroken chain in certification. MSC has certified fishing of cod, haddock, saithe, golden redfish, female lumpfish and herring around Iceland.
Even though LYSI has acquired the certification, the company can only offer a limited amount of MSC fish oil. LYSI is aiming towards getting the fish liver rendering plant in Thorlakshofn MSC certified as well, but once that is available all pure cod liver oil that LYSI produces will be MSC certified.
