Intake of vitamin D supplementation seems to be associated with a decrease in total mortality rates, according to a meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials including 57,311 participants.
These studies suggest that a daily intake of 300-2000 international units (7.5-20 µg) may decrease total mortality rate from life-threatening conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. The relationship between the status of baseline vitamine D, vitamin D dose and total mortality rates needs to be investigated.
